Cut

The cut consists of the facets, sides and apexes, which determine the shape and the exterior finish of the diamond.

The facets or surface of a cut diamond follow strict guidelines as to size and angle which exactly define the type of cut.

The most well-known diamond cuts are

Brilliant, Marquise, Princess, Pear, Oval, Heart and Emerald.

Reflection, refraction, dispersion

A diamond’s weight, cut, colour and clarity determine its value. The weight is measured in carats, and also expressed as hundredths of a carat or points.

Color

The optimum colour of a diamond is totally colourless. Diamonds come in a range of natural colours from totally colourless to yellow. We can also find a variety of natural colours called fancy, but these coloured diamonds are graded to a particular scale.

This particular property, which breaks down the light into the seven colours of the spectrum, is identified as fire.

Clarity

Sometimes, during the crystallisation process, small impurities are included in the structure of the diamond. They are called inclusions or flaws.

Diamonds are graded on a scale of clarity magnified by ten according to the size, quantity and location of their flaws.

Weight in carats

A diamond’s weight, cut, colour and clarity determine its value. The weight is measured in carats, and also expressed as hundredths of a carat or points.
